Square's Jack Dorsey Inspires a Comic Book

Jack Dorsey, the celebrity CEO of mobile payments company Square — who also has aspirations to one day be mayor of New York — was the inspiration for an upcoming graphic novel published by actress Alyssa Milano.

The comic, called Hacktivist, follows two men who run a social media company by day and hack by night.

"My inspiration for Hacktivist is actually Jack Dorsey, the creator of Twitter and Square," says Milano in a press release. "I picture him leaving the office at night and going home, where he locks himself in his room and starts hacking to change the world."

Hacktivist was announced last week ahead of the Comic-Con International event in San Diego. It will be published as a digital comic this fall and as a hardcover book next summer.

Dorsey's fame following the success of Twitter helped bring Square some immediate buzz despite early questions about Square's security and business model. By 2012, his business had grown so influential that American Banker named Dorsey its Innovator of the Year.

At last week's PayVest event, presented by PaymentsSource, American Banker and NYPAY in New York City, BNP Paribas exec Sergi Herrero reflected on the effect people like Dorsey have had on the banking world.

"Back in the day nobody knew who Jack Dorsey was. He was just a shy guy talking about Twitter," said Herrero, who heads BNP Paribas' L'Atelier North America division. "It’s the guys in the hoodie and shorts that you don't take seriously who could be the next person to change the banking industry."
