Corner Bank Ltd. plans to put access-control and identification functions on its Visa-branded contactless credit cards, a spokesperson for Legic Identsystems Ltd., the Swiss firm providing the technology for the effort, tells CardLine Global. The Switzerland-based bank's Cornercard arm began issuing the payWave-enabled cards last year. Bank officials did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday, and it was unclear how many cards would get the additional applications or when customers would receive the multiapplication cards. The Legic technology enables the bank to add the applications without the need of another chip on the card. The additional application could enable consumers to use the cards to access gyms and lockers or to prove identity for automobile-sharing programs, among other activities. Corner Bank issues Visa- and MasterCard-branded cards and has some 900,000 cards on issue, according to a statement.
