Dubai-based Emirates Bank and Turkey-based Vakif Bank have ordered wristwatches that carry chips with MasterCard Worldwide's PayPass contactless payment application, according to a statement from two Austrian companies that produced the device. Consumers can use the watch just as they would use a contactless card, by touching the device to a payment terminal. Austrian watchmaker LAKS and smart card firm Austria Card GmbH provided the technology for the watch. The companies did not say how many watches the banks ordered. Earlier this year, United Kingdom-based Altair Financial Services International PLC said it had received MasterCard approval for a wristwatch that includes a reloadable PayPass chip (CardLine Global, 30 June). In May 2007, MasterCard announced a PayPass watch with Garanti Bank in Turkey.
