Commuters in Warsaw, Poland, may use MasterCard PayPass cards as part of a transit-agency test of contactless-payment acceptance for the purchase of transit cards, according to On Track Innovations Ltd., a technology company this is providing contactless-payment readers for the test.
Approximately 100 bus, train and subway stations are participating in the trial, which began earlier this month., Israel-based On Track Innovations says.
Commuters may use any PayPass-enabled card issued by a Polish bank to buy transit tickets, On Track Innovations says. Initially, the transit agency is accepting only PayPass and not the contactless offerings of competing brands, such as Visa’s payWave, according to an On Track Innovations spokesperson.
The trial does not have an end date, a MasterCard spokesperson tells PaymentsSource. Twelve banks issue PayPass cards in Poland, she says.
On Track Innovations subsidiary ASEC S.A. is one of the ticket vending-machine operators participating in the test, though the company would not say how many contactless readers the unit is providing.
Six Pay S.A., a Luxembourg-based merchant acquirer, also is participating in the trial.
