Westpac Launches Mobile Stickers, Tests Host Card Emulation

Westpac has launched a new product that allows customers to make payments with any type of mobile device.

The Westpac PayTag can be attached to the back of a mobile device enabling users to make payments of up to $80 by holding their smartphone up to a contactless terminal.

Digital security provider Gemalto partnered with Westpac to develop this mobile payment sticker product. If the product is lost or stolen, customers are covered by MasterCard's zero liability policy for unauthorized transactions, Westpac New Zealand said in an Oct. 20 press release.

"Westpac PayTag uses PayPass contactless technology providing an easier and faster experience for our customers at point of sale," Westpac's Chief Product Officer Shane Howell, said in the release.

Westpac announced that it is trialing Host Card Emulation "digital wallet" technology which permits credit and debit card details to be accessible from Android smartphones. This offering will be available to customers through the beginning of 2015, Westpac said. The company has also been exploring how wearables such as smartwatches and Google Glass can be used for payments and other financial services.
