Mobile payments company Yapital has partnered with the German supermarket chain Wasgau to support smartphone payments with minimal technology upgrades.
A little more than half of Wasgau's stores currently offer mobile payment options, though the company plans to expand those options to every store shortly.
The Luxembourg-based vendor's Pay with Yapital software operates through a mobile app. Consumers use a QR code and PIN to link their phones to a Yapital account, and then make mobile payments by scanning QR codes presented by merchants at the point of sale, a method that's designed to require less work and investment than the NFC technology used by a number of other mobile contactless payment initiatives such as Apple Pay and most telecom-led consortiums.
