M&T Bank Corp. was among upstate New York's most acquisitive banking companies before it started expanding throughout the Middle Atlantic region during the past seven years.

Capitol Bancorp Ltd. of Lansing, Mich., reported Thursday that its second-quarter earnings fell 39% from a year earlier, to $6.3 million. Diluted earnings per share fell 41%, to 37 cents.

SVB Financial Group of Santa Clara, Calif., said it will shut down its money-losing investment banking unit, SVB Alliant.

Mississippi banking companies Hancock Holding Co. and Trustmark Corp. reported lower second-quarter earnings, but investors were unfazed.

First Place Financial Corp. of Warren, Ohio, said Wednesday that earnings in its fiscal fourth quarter, which ended June 30, rose 25% from a year earlier, to $5.6 million.

S&T Bancorp Inc. in Indiana, Pa., said Tuesday that its second-quarter net income increased 24% from the year earlier, to $13.9 million.

National Penn Bancshares Inc.'s second-quarter net income edged up 1% from a year earlier, to $16.23 million, the Boyertown, Pa., company said Tuesday.
