• HOMESTEAD, Fla. - Following the merger of Pan Am Horizons FCU into Power Financial CU, the credit union marked another milestone: the unearthing of a time capsule buried 25 years ago. Among the treasures found within: mementos from the Homestead Air force Base, newspapers from Jan. 15, 1982, a photo of the supervisory committee, a 25th anniversary promotion, as well as contribution from the Marine Support Battalion and the 1981 Christmas party program. On hand for the event was Howard Hawkins, Power Financial board member emeritus, who was present when the capsule was originally buried Jan. 15, 1982. "The unearthing of the time capsule is a fitting segue for Pan Am Horizons as it celebrates 25 years and begins a new era as part of Power Financial Credit Union." • WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Corporates have become a lot more than the "credit unions' credit union." For 2007, corporate CUs say they have more options and products than ever to assist credit unions when it comes to growing their options. Their strategies and niches differ, according to a Credit Union Journal survey of corporates across the country, but the goals are the same: help credit unions to achieve greater efficiencies, earn greater returns and take a little pressure off that margin squeeze. When asked how they can help their member CUs, corporates listed everything from ALM and balance sheet modeling to ACH and single-tier pricing on overnights. Inside this issue corporates outline some of their plans for 2007, and how CUs can take better advantage of what's being made available, page 10. • FLORISSANT, Mo. - * John Chappel was arrested minutes after attempting to rob his own CU-First Community CU, here-by threatening to start a fire if his demands were not met. His first mistake was robbing his own CU, where the head teller knew him by name. His second mistake was in walking into an office rather than to a teller, as it meant someone else had to be called in to bring cash to him, which allowed time to inform the rest of the employees and the police. His third mistake was in asking for still more cash when a bag of bait money was given to him, thereby giving police more time to arrive on the scene. When he attempted to leave, the police were waiting for him and he calmly turned himself over to them.
