U.S. Expects to Back Food Loan for Soviets
WASHINGTON - Between $1.2 billion and $1.5 billion in U.S. loan guarantees that would permit the republics of the Soviet Union to buy food may be announced sometime in the next three weeks, White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said.
The proceeds from the loans, earmarked for the purchase of U.S. food and grain, would come on top of the $2.5 billion in agricultural assistance granted Moscow by the United States earlier in 1991, Fitzwater said.
