CUPERTINO, Calif -- Verifone Inc. said it will team with Tandem Computers Inc. to market a "smart screen telephone."
Tandem is already active in the screen telephone business in Japan.
Verifone, which has provided many of the advanced phones in current home banking and shopping programs, is upgrading its terminal, which will be linked to Tandem server computers. The system, suitable for banking and other "multimedia" information services, will be available in mid-1994 and include a screen display, conventional keyboard and modem, magnetic stripe card reader, and software for automating card-based transactions.
The companies stress that the device will be affordable and require minimal customer training.
