New Verifone offering runs two applications.

Verifone Inc., which provides software for transaction processing, introduced a system that is capable of loading two programs.

Until now, most systems were capable of loading only a single program--typically a payment application for credit or debit purchases. In order to run a second program, a merchant could acquire a separate system or purchase a new application combining both functions.

The new system by Verifone, the Tranz 380x2, divides the memory into two independently operating halves, enabling the product to operate as two independent systems, each running one application. The user can switch from one application to the other by pushing a key.

The system is already being used by a merchant services provider to run parallel credit and debit applications for merchants in the Midwest. Because the applications access different payment networks, independent operations ensure that modifications to one application do not affect the other, eliminating the need for modified software.

Reseller prices range from $376 to $349, depending on quantity.
