Major bank stocks staged another late afternoon rally on Thursday, but it was more modest than the explosive gains of the previous day.

KeyCorp was the biggest winner, up $1.25 to $38.125. Fifth Third Bancorp rose $1.125 to $53.25. Boatmen's Bancshares improved 87.5 cents to $57.75.

Crestar Financial Corp. was up 75 cents to $37.50, Meridian Bancorp. rose 75 cents to $29.25, and First of America Bank Corp. improved 87.5 cents to $38.625.

But Nationsbank Corp. declined 25 cents to $46.875, and Norwest Corp. slipped 25 cents to $50.375. Wells Fargo & Co. slipped 75 cents to $104.625.
