Major bank stocks, like the overall market, were mixed Wednesday as investors awaited further developments from Washington on the federal budget.

The top gainers were BankAmerica Corp., up $1 to $44.875 in late trading, First Fidelity Bancorp, up $1 to $48.25, and Bank of New York, up 87.5 cents to $56.

Among losers, Northern Trust Corp. was off 75 cents to $41.25, Society Corp. was down 62.5 cents to $32.375, and Norwest Corp. was off 62.5 cents to $25.75.
