Commercial State Bank of Wagner, S.D., is providing customers with laser printed images of checks using a system developed by Information Technology Inc. and Unisys Corp.
Images of the front and back of the checks are made as they pass by an image camera on the check sorter at a speed of up to 500 checks per minute.
The images are copied to a five-inch optical disk with a capacity of approximately 300,000 checks. The optical disk is one of five that reside in a jukebox-like device with a total capacity of 1.5 million checks.
Once a check has been imaged it can be viewed on a personal computer, reprinted on a laser printer, or faxed.
On statement day, the images are printed in numeric order, 12 per page, on a laser printer that prints 30 pages per minute.
The bank, which has assets of $75 million, expects postal savings to be in excess of 40%. Information Technology is based in Lincoln, Neb. Unisys Corp. has headquarters in Blue Bell, Pa.
