CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte Hornets basketball star Muggsy Bogues is joining First Union National Bank for the second year in a row to promote the bank's WhizKidz math education program.

The program encourages math studies among students in grades four through eight with "KidzKash" vouchers that can be redeemed for prizes such as baseball caps, T-shirts, and posters.

A drawing at the end of the school year will award a school appearance by Mr. Bogues, a $5,000 savings bond, an AT&T home computer, a Hornets sky box party, and other prizes.

The bank piloted the program in eight counties last year and is extending it to all of North Carolina and to York, S.C., said North Carolina advertising manager Donna Ludwig.

The briefs were compiled from staff and wire reports.
