MasterCard grew fast in 2d quarter.

NEW YORK -- MasterCard International said that in the second quarter both accounts and the number of cards showed substantial gains over the corresponding quarter a year ago.

Worldwide, accounts grew 23.6% to 185.6 million in the second quarter, compared to 150.2 million in 1993 three months.

Cards in circulation grew 22% to 238.8 million. Gross dollar volume rose 24.5% to $94.1 billion.

In the United States, accounts grew 16.3% to 90.3 million, versus 77.6 million a year earlier. Cards in circulation grew 17.5% to 125.2 million, compared to 106.6 million in 1993.

At the same time, gross dollar volume rose 24.1% to $41.4 billion.

Worldwide, acceptance of MasterCard grew 12.1% to 12.6 million locations, while the number of MasterCard/Cirrus automated teller machines jumped 32.1% to nearly 180,000.

MasterCard said strong performance from the United States, Europe, and Asia/Pacific regions contributed significantly to the association's overall growth.
