Card Briefs: MasterCard Taking Maestro to Bermuda

NEW YORK - MasterCard International is taking its Maestro global on- line point-of-sale debit program to Bermuda, through an association with Bank of Butterfield.

In the first phase of the program 25 merchants, representing a cross section of Bermuda retail and restaurant establishments, will be set up for debit card acceptance. The group will be expanded over the summer to include other Bank of Butterfield merchants.

The second phase, later in the year, will involve issuing Maestro cards to Bank of Butterfield customers.

Also, Banco Nacional de Mexico, the largest financial institution in Mexico, has joined the Maestro program.

Banamex will bring to the Maestro system over 25,000 POS terminals and nearly four million debit cards.
