IN BRIEF: N.Y. Go-Ahead on Court-Ordered Deposits

ALBANY, N.Y. - New York credit unions have gained the power to accept court-ordered deposits for guardians of infants and minors.

The power was granted in a bill Gov. George Pataki signed into law Aug. 10.

"Credit unions in New York have demonstrated the investment acumen and financial strength to protect court-ordered deposits," New York State Credit Union League president Charles M. Whitney said in a statement. "When courts judge a credit union to be an appropriate depository for these monies, members can be assured of the same outstanding service they've come to know and expect."
