In Brief: Agency Gauging Private Deposit Coverage

The NCUA is changing its call reports for all 1995 reporting cycles to collect information about the extent of private insurance for deposits exceeding $100,000, the ceiling for federal coverage.

Call reports will ask whether credit unions have such insurance, the name of the company, and the amount of deposits covered.

Bob Loftus, NCUA director of public and congressional affairs, said the agency has added these items at the request of Congress, which is interested in finding out the extent of such coverage.

American Share Insurance, the country's largest private insurer, has been aggressively pushing a product that extends coverage $250,000 beyond the federal limit.
