First Union to Issue Jaguars Smart Cards

First Union National Bank of Florida will issue smart cards at home games during the inaugural season of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The bank has recruited Diebold Inc. to help develop the terminals and Schlumberger Smart Card Systems for card technology assistance.

Cards will contain pictures of the National Football League team or individual players. Fans determine the amount of money they want to put on the stored value cards, then can use them for souvenirs, concessions, or merchandise in the stadiums.

The bank said the card would be the first of its kind issued in a Florida sports stadium.

First Union, which became the exclusive bank of the Jaguars in February 1994, called this the first step in its plan to issue smart cards in all major metropolitan areas in Florida by 1997.

Last month, First Union announced plans to issue one million smart cards in Atlanta between September 1995 and the start of the Summer Olympics in 1996.
