Capital Briefs: Glass-Steagall Dies Again in Committee

One vote wasn't enough to clear Glass-Steagall repeal from the House Banking Committee.

The panel had voted Tuesday to repeal the 62-year-old law but reconvened Thursday to do it again. This time, though, 13 committee members who had been absent Tuesday had an opportunity to be recorded on the issue.

The missing 13 had been on the House floor voting on an unrelated issue.

"I was shocked," said Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio. "I am saying this with respect, but when (Rep. Charles E.) Schumer (D-N.Y.) started speaking, I figured I had time to go to the floor and come back for the final vote."

The repeal legislation passed 29-8 the first time and 38-6 Thursday. Both votes will be included in the legislative history.
