Card Briefs: NCR Upgrades Terminals In Navy Ship Program

NCR Corp. said it is upgrading automated teller machines and installing debit point of sale terminals on destroyers and other Navy ships.

More than 500 ATMs have been installed through the "ATMs at Sea" program since NCR was awarded a contract in 1988. The contract to upgrade was awarded in 1993 and should be completed by 1998.

The Navy has expanded the program's features and capabilities with a fully integrated system that lets sailors get cash from ATMs and make purchases in ships' stores and post offices through debit terminals.

The Navy split-pay option lets sailors have a percentage of their pay deposited directly into a bank account at home and the rest put in a ship's ATMs at Sea safekeeping account. Standard ATM cards and personal identification numbers let crew members withdraw money from their shipboard accounts.
