Tech Bytes: Deluxe Offers On-Line POS Check Authorization

Deluxe Corp. announced the launching of Scan OnLine, an enhancement of the country's largest check authorization network.

With direct electronic access to data bases on bad checks and closed bank accounts, Scan OnLine is "the most comprehensive payment protection system ever created for authorizing checks at point of sale," said Tim Birk, president of Scan, a unit of Deluxe's recently formed payment protection systems division.

The on-line version of Scan - short for Shared Check Authorization Network - offers information on more than 70 million active accounts.

The system can assess the likelihood that certain customers and-or certain transactions could result in a bad check, and it lets retailers connect "live" to the Deluxe network. Until now, Scan required a retailer's on-site host computer or a third-party processor for authorizations.

Scan members can switch out to Scan OnLine for all transactions or just for high-risk checks.
