CYPHENING: The act of pulling personal information from Web surfers, without their knowledge or consent, for the purpose of putting together customer profiles that will be used in selling these persons products and services. Cyphening usually entails a passive recording of transactional information or planting client-side information browsers, also called "cookies," on the surfers' hard drives.
