On-Line Banking: Huntington Gives a Face-Lift to Its Web Site

Huntington Bancshares has unveiled the latest of what are expected to be regular upgradings of its World Wide Web site.

"We have begun to think of ourselves more as a software company" that continually issues new versions of its Internet offerings, said William Randle, executive vice president of the Columbus, Ohio, banking company's direct access services.

The most recent upgrading-which Mr. Randle referred to as Huntington.com, version 2.0-consisted mainly of cosmetic improvements.

He said future improvements will include the ability to transfer funds among accounts, view credit card information, and do investment transactions.

In June 1996, Huntington become one of the first financial institutions to offer access to checking accounts and the ability to pay bills over the Internet.

Huntington hopes its upgradings help increase its Internet customers from "tens of thousands" to 100,000 by yearend.

Huntington's site uses Virtual Branch Manager software from Security First Technologies of Atlanta.

Resource Marketing, a technology marketing company also based in Columbus, will promote the bank's new look with banner ads on sites such as Travelocity, the Dilbert Zone, and MSNBC.
