Smart Bits: Stored Value Cards Used at Okla. State Games

Oklahoma State University fans can use smart cards at sports events on campus to buy items from concession stands.

The university has installed a stored-value system, developed by Precis Smart Card Systems, at two sports venues.

Precis was formed in 1993 as Advantage Data Systems by a group of legal and medical professionals. The company specializes in medical smart card systems, with its MediCard in use at the Surgical Centers of America in Oklahoma City. The MediCard, a Gemplus smart card, stores health information on a computer chip.

The university is the first to use Precis Cache, a new product from the company.

The university began issuing "Spirit Cash" cards in $10 denominations to students for use at the Gallagher-Iba Arena and Reynolds Stadium on Feb. 15. Limited distribution and special artwork will make the cards collectible, Precis said.

If the program is deemed successful, it could be expanded for the fall semester.
