In Brief: Star Takes Over 9 Supermarket Branches

Star Banc Corp. said Monday that it has taken over nine suburban Cincinnati supermarket bank locations formerly operated by Provident Financial Group.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Star, a $17 billion-asset company, opened branches Monday in the eight Ohio and one Kentucky Thriftway store locations.

Cincinnati-based Provident moved all deposits, assets, and customers to nearby traditional branches. The company said it was consolidating overlapping branches and declined to say whether the supermarket locations were profitable.

Thriftway was recently acquired by Winn Dixie, which has a supermarket branch agreements with Star in Louisville, Ky.

The addition of the nine stores brought Star's total supermarket branch total to 83. A spokesman said the company plans to have 100 in-store branches by yearend.
