Cybercash Using Software from a Certicom Unit

Broadening its options in on-line payment processing, Cybercash Inc. of Reston, Va., has licensed SSL Plus, a software tool kit for the Secure Sockets Layer standard.

SSL Plus, the leading development package for the most widely used commercial security protocol on the World Wide Web, is a product of Consensus Development Corp. of Berkeley, Calif., which the Canadian data security vendor Certicom Corp. acquired in July.

Cybercash, a pioneering Internet payments company and supporter of the credit card industry's more specialized SET protocol, is thus linked with Certicom, which champions the elliptic curve cryptography method that is well suited for smart cards and other small devices with limited computing capacity.

Cybercash senior vice president Tom Costello called that "a powerful information security combination."

Cybercash is adding "another layer of strength to its offerings (that) further drives the burgeoning Internet communications and transaction industry," said Certicom president Rick Dalmazzi.
