State Street Corp. plans to launch a Web-based service in January to help sponsors compare their pension plans' returns with those of similar plans and portfolios.
Sponsors will be able to measure performance against a data base of about 160 plans and more than 5,000 portfolios, the company said.
Results will be available monthly for a range of investment styles, plan types, and portfolio sizes. Names of companies will not be released without approval.
"It's really giving them direct access on a very timely basis to help them do their jobs," said Laurette M. Bryan, a senior vice president who heads State Street's pension consulting business.
State Street, which is based in Boston, has $459 billion of assets under management.
