Tech Bytes: First Union, Transpoint Team Up on Net Bills

First Union Corp. of Charlotte, N.C., said Monday that it will pilot test Internet-based bill delivery and payment with Transpoint, the joint venture of First Data Corp., Microsoft Corp., and the Citibank unit of Citigroup.

The announcement came a month after First Union became the first institution to deliver bills electronically to customers, working with Checkfree Corp. of Atlanta.

"Transpoint is one of the strategic companies we plan to work with in this arena," said First Union senior vice president Edgar Brown. "Its business model provides significant opportunities for us to better serve our customers."

Transpoint has announced bill presentment pilots with several institutions, including units of Bank One Corp., KeyCorp, Wells Fargo & Co., Merrill Lynch & Co., and Mellon Bank Corp., with more than 24 participating billers.
