Capital Briefs: FDIC: Year Is One for the Books in M&A

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. on Wednesday released its quarterly regional reports on banking and economic activity.

In addition to discussing bank trends in each of the agency's eight regions, the reports include a three-part analysis of recent bank merger activity. Among other things, the reports concluded that at $233 billion, the value of bank mergers announced in 1998 have exceeded the value of all mergers announced between 1992 and 1997.
