Tech Bytes: 2 Biometric Groups Propose Standard

Two groups dedicated to promoting biometric technologies have unveiled what they hope will become an industry technical standard.

The Human Authentication Application Programming Interface is the work of the U.S. Biometric Consortium and the Commercial Biometric Developers Consortium.

Adam Backenroth, a Chase Manhattan Corp. vice president, called the proposed standard "a step in the right direction" but said he could not judge its direct impact on the banking industry.

The Financial Services Technology Consortium, a banking group on whose executive committee Mr. Backenroth serves, promotes biometric techniques, such as fingerprinting and iris scanning, and sponsors research and testing efforts.
