Hand-Reader Firm Says 15,000 in Use

Recognition Systems Inc., a leader in biometric identification based on hand geometry, said more than 15,000 of its hand "readers" have been installed.

Some of the company's most visible installations are at health clubs. The readers were also used for access control at Olympics venues in Atlanta two years ago. Banks use them for authorizing access to vaults and cashing of checks.

Customers in the financial industry include the American Express Co., the Federal Reserve System, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo Bank.

"Hand geometry scanning is easy and nonobtrusive," said William Wilson, president of the company. "With a level of security higher than card-based systems and a cost approaching them, biometric hand geometry is now as mainstream as any other ID technology."
