In Brief: Net.Bank to Offer 'Safe-Deposit Box' for Data

Net.Bank has invested in development of an Internet-based "safe-deposit box" service and expects to be among the first to offer it.

The fee-based service, developed by Atlanta-based Intellimedia Commerce Inc., lets consumers transfer sensitive electronic documents, such as tax returns and wills, between their PCs and personal "storage boxes," using a secure Internet connection. Users can gain access to the documents at any time and grant access to others.

The service would be offered this year exclusively through financial institutions.

The offering fits in with Net.Bank's strategy to take services "from the traditional banking realm and offer them on the Internet," said D.R. Grimes, Net.Bank's chief executive officer.
