Spare Change: Riggs Joins Turkish Quake Aid Effort

Riggs National Corp., the largest bank holding company headquartered in the nation's capital, is reaching out to help the victims of the devastating earthquake that crippled western Turkey last week.

Long known for its close relationships with embassies in Washington, $5.5 billion-asset Riggs established an earthquake relief bank account for the Turkish Embassy. It will accept any monetary contributions to help provide aid to the survivors.

The account was opened Aug. 19, two days after the powerful quake, which hit 7.8 on the Richter scale.

"Everyone has been touched by the devastation," said a Riggs spokesman. "We wanted to do anything we could."

Riggs said checks or money orders can be mailed to the Turkish Embassy Earthquake Victims Relief Fund, c/o Riggs Bank NA, Department 0572, Washington, D.C. 20073. The bank is also accepting wire transfers.

Money will be accepted at any of Riggs' 53 branches in Washington in addition to its locations in London and Berlin. Call 800-638-5800 or log onto www.riggsbank.com for more information -- Matt Andrejczak
