Card Briefs: Capital One to Add 3,000 Jobs in Virginia

Capital One Financial Corp. plans to hire 3,000 more workers this year in its home state of Virginia and add more office space.

The company will lease or build 500,000 square feet in its four Virginia locations.

Richard D. Fairbank, chairman and chief executive officer, said the expansion plans reflect the company's "very rapid growth trajectory." Capital One added five million customers and nearly 5,000 workers in 1998.

"We increased earnings in excess of 40% while making record investments in our business," Mr. Fairbank said. "We're currently adding 20,000 new customers a day."
