In Brief: Chase to Charge Noncustomers at Its ATMs

Chase Manhattan Corp. will begin surcharging noncustomers at its automated teller machines beginning Jan. 9, the company said Wednesday.

With 1,499 ATMs in New York and New Jersey, Chase said it has the largest ATM network in the New York metropolitan area. The bank will levy fees ranging from $1 to $1.50.

The fees will be waived at 60 branches in low-income neighborhoods, and noncustomers who receive public assistance payments electronically will not be charged at any machine, according to the bank.

Chase Manhattan said the surcharges were "designed to ensure that noncustomers who use Chase's network contribute to the significant cost of operation," and added that 70% of U.S. banks charge noncustomers to use their ATMs.
