National City Bank in Cleveland, the bank unit of National City Corp., promoted Renold D. Thompson to the newly created post of portfolio manager of its multinational department.

He continues to report to the department's manager, Timothy J. Lathe. Both are executive vice presidents.

Mr. Thompson was manager of National City's structured finance division. He is now responsible for the initial approval of syndicated credits.

He joined National City in 1985 as a vice president and lending officer in national commercial lending.

Two years later he became regional manager of the multinational division. In the 1990s he has helped develop National City's syndicated loan business into a standalone division, and nearly doubled the structured finance portfolio to its current $1.2 billion.

National City Bank also promoted Charles E. Murawski, who has been tax director of the company and its corporate treasury department since 1994, to the rank of senior vice president.

Mr. Murawski is responsible for federal, state, local, and international tax management. He started at National City in 1992 as an assistant vice president and was promoted to vice president in 1994.

He reports to National City's treasurer, Tom Richlovsky.
