Goldman Sachs' Cohn Tapped to Run White House Council: Reports

WASHINGTON – Gary Cohn, president and chief operating officer at Goldman Sachs, has been offered the job of director of the National Economic Council in the Trump administration, several news outlets reported Friday.

If appointed, Cohn would be one of numerous Goldman Sachs faces past and present in the new administration. Steven Mnuchin, President-elect Trump's pick to be Treasury secretary, is a former partner at Goldman Sachs. NBC News first reported the news of Cohn's being offered the NEC job, which unlike other jobs in the administration does not require Senate confirmation.

The NEC coordinates domestic and international economic policymaking and provides policy advice to the president. It is also viewed as a jumping-off point to higher positions within the administration.

Cohn has been at Goldman Sachs since 1990. Before becoming president and chief operating officer, he was co-chief operating officer of fixed income, currency and commodities. Before working at Goldman, Cohn was a director of the London Metals Exchange.
