Regions Financial in Birmingham, Ala., has hired FBI veteran John Boles to oversee its investigations of cybersecurity and international threats.
Boles was most recently assistant director of the FBI's International Operations Division, where he coordinated its global strategy for dealing with high-level cyber-risks and worked with the private sector to combat malware and botnet attacks.
At the $125 billion-asset Regions, Boles will monitor threats affecting the bank's customers and coordinate responses. He will report to Regions' head of corporate security, Bill Burch.
Boles, who worked as a cryptologic technician at the U.S. Navy before spending 20 years in the FBI, said in a press release Tuesday that he was attracted to Regions because of its commitment to customer protection.
"The way criminals operate continues to evolve, whether it's how they initiate fraudulent wire transfers, how they carry out online schemes, or any number of other tactics," he said.
