Total annual pre-tax U.S. credit card profits have grown from $6 billion in 1990 to over $20 billion in 2000. This year, profits could exceed $30 billion. The past 15 years largely have been good to the credit card industry, primarily due to tremendous organic growth rates and an increasingly sophisticated use of customer information.
