ITHACA, N.Y. - With the help of 79 dedicated volunteers, Alternatives Federal Credit Union’s Community Tax Program filed more than 1,200 federal tax returns, returning an average of $1,514 to clients served as part of its participation in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
More than 1,200 state tax returns were also filed, putting an additional $403, on average, back into the pockets of working families in the community, the credit union said.
This is the sixth year Alternatives has participated in VITA. New for the 2008 season, the program partnered with Catholic Charities to bring free tax preparation to its clientele, and completed 22 returns through this new partnership.(c) 2008 The Credit Union Journal and SourceMedia, Inc.
