That’s how much worth of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters retiree George Shoemaker carried into the credit union in 20 pickle jars. It took more than two hours for the coin counter to add it all up.

“I decided back around 1990 to start saving my loose change,” said Shoemaker, who rounded up the pickle jars while he was working as a meat cutter in a nearby grocery store.

Shoemaker, who now lives in Albany, Ga., still visits his credit union. He said he plans to use the coinage in his retirement.
