The Alabama Credit Union Association has endorsed Republican Luther Strange in the race for the U.S. Senate seat formerly occupied by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Strange currently holds the seat by the appointment of former Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley, and will be part of a special election primary on Aug. 15 and, if necessary, a Sept. 26 runoff election.

“I’m so thankful for the endorsement and support of the Alabama Credit Union Association,” Strange said in a statement. “They are valuable members of our state and their contributions to our communities and family businesses are numerous."
The association credited Strange with a long history of supporting community-based financial institutions like credit unions and said he favors rolling back some of the regulations CUs have faced under Dodd-Frank. As Alabama’s attorney general, Strange’s office supported legislation to create data security notification standards for Alabama, which CUs have long favored.
“Sen. Strange recognizes the integral role credit unions play within their communities,” said LSCU & Affiliates President/CEO Patrick La Pine. “As attorney general, his office backed legislation favorable to credit unions. It is important for our credit unions to support individuals who are aware of the need to constrain harmful regulations, and we look forward to working with Sen. Strange as he continues to do what is best for Alabamians and credit unions.”
Strange spent six years as Alabama’s attorney general before being appointed to the Senate. He currently serves on the Senate’s Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry; Armed Services; Budget; and Energy and Natural Resources Committees.
