Alert Issued On New ATM Scam

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - (08/03/05) -- A new fraud involving the use ofwireless cameras to steal ATM codes from consumers is making itsway around the country. In this new scam, criminals are attaching awireless camera to the front of an ATM, often disguising it as partof the card-scanning equipment found on every machine, according tothe California Bankers Association. The camera records all of theinformation used to access the card and is transmitted to arecording device, usually held by the plotters nearby, in somecases a nearby parking lot. The bankers are warning consumers totake precautions when using ATMs, using your body to shield thekeypad when you make a transaction.
