ROME, N.Y. - (04/07/06) -- State regulators approved theconversion of AmeriCU CU to a community charter after the creditunion agreed to apply for a smaller community footprint. The newcharter will allow the $550 million credit union to serve 750,000residents in the central New York counties of Cayuga, Madison,Onondaga and Oswego--one of the biggest community grants everapproved by state regulators--but much smaller than the six-county1.2 million population field of membership the credit unionrequested a year ago. The credit union was chartered in 1950 toserve the former Rome Air Depot, now Griffiss Air Force Base, andcurrently serves 400 select groups.
