SCRANTON, Penn. – Hazleton Newspaper Employees FCU has merged into Scranton Times Downtown FCU, the latest newspaper employees’ credit union to close its presses.

The tiny Hazleton Newspaper Employees FCU had less than $1 million in assets. Scranton Times Downtown has almost $11 million in assets.

The list of newspaper credit unions closing or merging out of existence over the past three years includes: Times-News Employees FCU, in Twin Falls, Idaho; Birmingham News Employees CU; Charleston (W.Va.) Newspapers FCU; Media Hawaii FCU; Madison News CU; Fort Worth Telegram Employees FCU; Boston Globe Employees CU; (New Orleans) Times Picayune Employees CU; and, First Edition Community CU.
