Branch Manager Convicted Of $400,000 Theft

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A former branch manager for Media First CU on Friday pleaded guilty in federal court to embezzling nearly $400,000 from the credit union for the Kansas City Star newspaper.

Joyce Buchanan, 55, admitted that between Dec. 9, 2002, and Jan. 16, 2007, she embezzled $198,250. She also admitted that during that period she falsely represented to the credit union that loans totaling $198,553 were made to individuals. In reality, Buchanan made the loans payable to herself in the form of cash and checks.

The credit union, which serves employees of the Miami Herald, recently was merged into Miami’s Financial FCU.
