FRANKLIN, Va. — Hillary Gunn's CPR training helped the Bronco FCU teller recently save a member's life.

Last week, as a member approached her station, Gunn noticed the man did not look well. He was short of breath and was breathing hard when he reached Gunn's window. She asked if he wanted to sit down while she finished the transaction, and the member agreed.

A coworker helped the man to a place to sit, but the member collapsed before he took three steps and stopped breathing. Gunn called 911, but knew she could not wait for paramedics. Certified in CPR, Gunn performed two rounds of compressions and got the member breathing again.

"You always hope that you don't have to use [your CPR training], but... you never know when you might need it," stated Gunn in a published report.

Gunn pointed out that Bronco held a large CPR class three years ago, and one offsite more recently.

Pam Vaughan, HR manager at the $190 million-asset BFCU, believes it's important to have someone at each office with CPR knowledge. "To have someone like Hillary, who knows exactly what to do in that situation, is a good thing," Vaughan said.

Gunn added that CPR training should not be passed up when offered. "You never know when you might save someone's life, maybe a loved one or even a complete stranger."
