SAGINAW, Mich. – Catholic FCU said it granted $129,200 in scholarships to 286 area college students who are members of the credit union through their annual Monsignor Forbes Scholarship Fund – one of the largest credit union scholarship programs.
The scholarships are open to members of the credit union who are planning to attend or currently are attending a college, university, community college, or a trade or technical school. The award is based upon the student’s personal achievements, scholastic accomplishment, financial need, community service and grade point average.
Catholic FCU’s scholarship program is exceeded in its breadth only by that of North Carolina State Employees CU, which awards a scholarship to every public college or university in the state every year at a cost of about $7 million.
The Catholic FCU scholarship program was originated in 1982 to honor the legacy of the late Msgr. Eugene A. Forbes, whose dedication and commitment to encouraging the pursuit of higher education, coupled with the credit union’s philosophy of “people helping people,” continues to be an integral part of the credit union.
Since its inception, the Msgr. Forbes Scholarship Committee has awarded more than $815,000 to students who want to begin or continue their education.
